When can I start exercising after giving birth?

Quick answer: ACOG says many people can begin exercising within days of an uncomplicated vaginal birth, and that anyone who had a cesarean or complications should ask their ob-gyn first.

What ACOG says

ACOG's patient FAQ: "If you had a healthy pregnancy and a normal vaginal delivery, you should be able to start exercising again soon after the baby is born. Usually, it is safe to begin exercising a few days after giving birth—or as soon as you feel ready. If you had a cesarean birth or complications, ask your ob-gyn when it is safe to begin exercising again." And: "Stop exercising if you feel pain."

Committee Opinion 804: "Exercise routines may be resumed gradually after pregnancy as soon as medically safe, depending on the mode of delivery (vaginal or cesarean birth) and the presence or absence of medical or surgical complications."
